When I finished Friday night, I was overjoyed to be done for about five minutes. And then I started missing it. I missed Harry, Ron, and Hermione. I missed Hogwarts. I missed the magical world. And now it's Tuesday morning, and I'm still missing it all. I still wish I could return to Hogwarts, and I'm almost willing to start this whole crazy marathon over again just to reenter that world.
So last week, I read through the entire Harry Potter series. It took a lot longer than I was expecting. I knew they were fast reads, so I thought it would take a day and a half, maybe two. Nope. Four days. Forty-five hours of reading. By the end of it, I was tired of Harry Potter, tired of doing nothing but sitting and reading all day. The seventh book took me longer than it should have because I just didn't feel like reading about Harry Potter anymore. The world of Harry Potter is addictive. I also noticed just how well the characters age throughout the series. Harry starts out as an eleven-year-old who is unsure of himself and his place in this newly discovered world. By the end of the series, he is a supremely confident seventeen-year-old, yet he's still figuring out this whole romance thing. And despite the fact that Harry goes through things we will never experience, we still see ourselves in him and his friendships and his struggles. Even if we came to this series as an adult instead of a child, there are still characters and experiences to relate to. We love the characters because we grew up alongside them. Rowling is a master of comic relief. These books are funny. Serious, too, and occasionally terrifying. But there is always something funny to break the tension (Ron and Hermione's kiss in the middle of the battle of Hogwarts is a perfect example of this!). I found myself chuckling more than I expected to. The series as a whole is profound, but it's the comical moments and chapters that make it so enjoyable. Comedy is an essential part of these books. I could go on for a very long time about all the things that make Harry Potter amazing. (I haven't even touched on the immense amount of imagination it must have taken to build such a complex world!) But I want to hear your thoughts too - because I'm sure you have some. :) What is your favorite part of the Harry Potter series? Have you reread them lately (or ever)? Share your thoughts in the comments!

I have teenagers who have been consumed with HP since it first came out! I haven't read the books (more than just to look into them before I allowed my kids to) but I have seen all the movies a million times! They are on my list but, I don't think it will be anytime soon! :) Glad you made it through!

They are great escape books in between reading other books. (And of course, they're better than the movies. ;) I hope you get to finish the series someday soon!

I am amazed it only took you 4 days! I am a slow reader though, so I never in a million years would have guessed a day and a half -- or even a week! If I really and truly wanted to marathon this series, I still think I would need a full week and even that would take some major dedication. As you know, I just started my own re-read, but I'm going for a more leisurely pace. I may read other things in between because I never want to feel sick of Harry, even for a little while :)

If there were no distractions, I could read 100 pages in an hour - but that didn't always happen. :) The only time I was a little tired of it was the last day because it took me longer to read the last book than it should have. I was eager to be done. But then I missed it right away! Even now, a couple weeks later, I'm wanting to dive back into the series. Harry Potter is seriously addicting! Savor your reread!

It is addicting! I have lots of distractions and things to do so, going slow is pretty much my only option :) Though getting off the internet more often might help... I forgot to say before also that you are spot on abou the humor is these books -- I almost forgot how clever they are :)

I read through all the books in the past week too! They are incredibly addictive, and I still have the plots running through my head. Still trying not to think of wands brandishing magic or think longingly of time turners when I think about all the work I need to takckle...

I know what you mean, Grace! It's hard to remember those things aren't real, because you lived in that world for so many hours. Isn't it fun to read them all in one week? It's like you really go to school at Hogwarts!

My name is Julie, and I own a lot of books. As in, they are stacked on the floor because I've run out of room on the shelves. And those shelves? There are so many books on them that they smile -- not sag; smile. This blog will cover book reviews and all manner of other bookish things.
