It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

This weekly chance to add to your reading list is hosted by Kathryn at Book Date.
I had the chance to go to a huge book sale on Friday, hosted by an area church as a ministry fundraiser. The whole gym was filled with tables of books. I spent a happy hour browsing (although my little guy got pretty fed up in about half that time). I walked out with a whole box of books, but surprisingly only four for me (two of which I've already read but wanted to own). The rest of the box was filled with books for my little guy! And my Sunday afternoon project was to figure out how to fit them all on his already full bookshelves. That was a challenge.

What I Read Last Week

The Penderwicks in Spring by Jeanne Birdsall (This book made me laugh and cry. Literally. I rarely cry over a book, but this one did it. These characters! They're just amazing.)
Tolstoy and the Purple Chair: My Magical Year of Reading by Nina Sankovitch (I had high hopes for this one, but it didn't quite live up to them. Still an enjoyable read, though.)

What I'm Reading Now

The Shepherd's Castle by George MacDonald (I picked six books that I own that I've been really wanting to read and committed to reading them this year. This is one of them. I'm only a few pages in, but I'm enjoying it so far.)
Grace-Based Parenting by Tim Kimmel (I've been reading a parenting book a month to try and prepare myself for what's coming. This is April's selection.)

What's Coming Up Next

Uprooted by Naomi Novik (I've heard a lot of good things about this one. I'm really looking forward to it!)

Ooooh, I'm so curious which books you got your little guy! I recently went to 2 local fundraiser garage sales -- they had lots of stuff other than books, but I'm sure you won't surprised to hear I combed over the book sections! They were $0.50-$1 each and for a good cause, sooooo I think that was money well spent! I always say to myself I should buy used more often anyway (less wasteful, less expensive, etc.) -- and this was a nice way to give it a try :)

The majority of the books I got were Arch books (which, if you're not familiar with them, are like the Christian equivalent to Little Golden books). I was so excited to find those! I also got quite a few picture books that were in surprisingly good shape. I love buying books and helping others at the same time! :)

Hooray for a wonderful book sale! I've decided that books are one of the few things I don't mind having all over my house (mine and the ones for the kids).

I will be interested to see what you think of Grace-Based Parenting. It's on my tbr list.

Nothing wrong with decorating with books, right? ;)

I'm only a few chapters in to Grace-Based Parenting. I'm enjoying it so far, but I'm hoping it will get more practical and less philosophical as the book goes on. Theory is all fine and good, but I need techniques! :)

I hope you enjoy Uprooted. I've heard good things about it, too (but I have yet to actually read it!)

I've heard so many good things about it that I actually bought a copy at Barnes & Noble, rather than picking it up at the library, which is my usual M.O. Hope it lives up to the hype!

Yay for book sales!! I actually just discussed the same with my husband - we need a plan for our son's book collection, I am out of room and have book piles. :( Lol.

I love the Penderwicks, although I have only read the first one. It looks like I need to work on the rest!

Have a great week!

I ended up taking off a bunch of books he's too young for right now and putting them in a box for later. That worked well this time, but it won't the next time I come home with a big box of books! :)

The Penderwick series just gets better and better. They're definitely books I'll be rereading, probably multiple time. I hope you check out the rest!

My name is Julie, and I own a lot of books. As in, they are stacked on the floor because I've run out of room on the shelves. And those shelves? There are so many books on them that they smile -- not sag; smile. This blog will cover book reviews and all manner of other bookish things.
