The Moment I Knew I Was Addicted to Books

I have three problems:
- I own a lot of books.
- My library is upstairs.
- The staircase currently looks like this:

Yup, we're redoing the staircase. Demolition started this past weekend. That means I am completely cut off from my books upstairs.

Now, I knew about this in advance. My husband gave me plenty of warning so that I could gather the books I would want to read in the near future. He also promised me that he would get this project done as soon as possible - two or three weeks.

So last Thursday evening was spent enjoying my last minutes in my library while frantically gathering books. Two weeks' worth of books shouldn't be hard to find, right? Here's the stack I finally accumulated:

Now I'm a pretty fast reader, but that's pretty excessive even for me. And even with a stack of 14 books to last me two weeks, I still am mourning the inaccessibility of my library. Not being able to get to my books is bothering me a lot more than I thought it would.

I think this is a sign that I am officially addicted to books. Oh, and that I suffer from this:

Any fellow sufferers out there? How did you deal with your fear?

Yes, I am an addict. My approach? A one story house ;)

That would certainly solve my problem! Except I'd probably run out of places to put books. :)

Wow! You totally should've linked this up for #bookwormproblems - because that is QUITE the bookworm problem! I'd go nuts if I couldn't get to my books for a few weeks too! I'm sure I'd inevitably hate the ones I'd selected ahead of time, and be trying to clamber up to the other ones, haha!

My husband said that I could get up there if I desperately need to, but it doesn't look that possible to me! Hopefully my stack will last. :)

Wow! Yes, I can relate to that. I'm guessing that no matter how many I would've brought downstairs, the minute the stairs were gone, I would've been drawn to the ones left behind. :) Hope the work goes quickly and smoothly!

That's pretty much what happened! I keep thinking of books upstairs I'm in the mood to read, but there's nothing I can do about it. :)

The fear is real! We might run out of books one day in spite of our toppling TBR piles and out of control library check outs! :)

I hope the stairs are fixed quickly!

If that day ever comes, it would be a great tragedy! :) I'm glad I'm not the only one that suffers from this. And thankfully, my husband is making fast progress on this project!

Ok,

1.) How awesome to have a library in your house!!!! I love that!

2.) Well, the downside to being a SLOW reader, which I am, means there are so many books I will never get to. The upside? I will never run out of things to read. I don't have the phobia. I don't think I will even ever have to ask for reading recommendations. My TBR is more than sufficient to keep me reading for the rest of my life.:)
But I am jealous of those that can chew through a book in no time.

Good luck on the renovation!

There would definitely be upsides to not having to worry about running out of books. But I think that no matter how slow I read, I'd still worry. I'm just that sort of person. :)

I've pictured myself in this dilemma and have imagined myself running around making giant stacks of books downstairs - gathering way more books that I could possibly need! I think you've shown a great deal of restraint. Good luck with the wait! :D

I was fine with the books I picked until yesterday. Then I was in the mood for something fiction and realized that the majority of books I brought down were nonfiction. Suddenly not being able to get to the rest of my books is extremely annoying again! :)

Definitely have that fear. For this fact, I am now glad I have a Kindle.

If I ever decide to get a Kindle, that instant access to much reading material would probably be the reason! :)

My name is Julie, and I own a lot of books. As in, they are stacked on the floor because I've run out of room on the shelves. And those shelves? There are so many books on them that they smile -- not sag; smile. This blog will cover book reviews and all manner of other bookish things.
